Corner Mockup Fitting

A peek into the fitting room! Here I am conducting a mockup fitting for a costume I am draping for a solo dance performance called Corner here at UT. In a unique twist, this costume has to fit not one, but four different dancers. They are relatively close in size, but when you are custom fitting something it really ends up fitting each person totally differently.

When you are fitting a mockup, you don't use the actual fabric that the costume will be built out of. Instead, you use a cheaper alternative, focusing on something that has a similar drape, or hand, to what you will be using. You don't want to use a heavy tablecloth type of cotton for a chiffon dress. The pants will be a deep navy blue, almost black, with a grey panel set in the front of the left leg. The blouse will be white.

One of the challenges of draping the blouse was the asymmetrical collar. One side stands up and out, and the other falls down almost flat on the collarbone. It took some fiddling, but I'm happy with the one pictured here (probably my fourth attempt at it).

In knitting I have begun a new sock, but there has been little time for anything else.

Fingerless Mitts

A pair of fingerless mitts that I gifted to a costume shop friend as her Secret Santa. At the time it was still rather warm outside and they seemed a little much, but now that we are into the Austin winter they are serving her well. This is a pattern of my own devising, knit from a single skein of Noro Silk Garden. I didn't worry about the fact that they wouldn't match because she loves funky color, these colors in particular.

Sunset Pic

I almost forgot I took this picture. While talking on the phone two or so weeks ago with my stellar friend, Noelle, she told me I must go outside to see the sunset. I'm always looking for the occasional reason to escape the costume shop. On this occasion I was handsomely rewarded.

A Niece

I am now an aunt to not only my adorable nephew AJ, but last night my 2nd sister way up north and her husband welcomed Elsa Lynn into their family. She is a healthy 8 lbs and 1 oz, and came out with one hand on top of her head, just like her big brother. Within a half hour she was sucking her thumb. It was a natural birth at home with a highly trained midwife, something that my sister wanted very much to do.

Oh happy day!

Mackie Rules!

Yeah! I figured out how to get my vertical pictures uploaded, well, vertical. When I download photos off my camera onto Mackie, they go directly to iPhoto. I can rotate them into an upright position, but they still didn't import that way into Blogger. It turned out if I exported them into the Pictures files, then they upload correctly. I knew there had to be a way. Anyway, I like this picture because I was able to take it on a day in which it was relatively sunny. Right now it's quite chilly in Austin so I'm glad I finished this hat in time to wear it. It's a comfy, snug fit.

I couldn't resist this next shot!

Mackie Rules! A quartet of MacBooks graced a table in the UT Costume Shop today. It makes me happy.
